Anhinga

Anhingas are always drying and preening their feathers.  When they get saturated with water due to the lack of sufficient repellant oils they can't fly.  Some people refer to these birds as ugly but I disagree, in fact I can't think of a bird that deserves that description.  I took these photos on the Lake Harris waterfront at Eustis, FL.  There are some remains of an old boat factory right behind a restaurant called "The Crazy Gator" where the Anhingas and other birds perch on the tops of rotted pilings just above the water line.  The top photo is of a male with the breeding markings and the bottom one is a female.
